CHUR is a graffiti writer from New Zealand. He is a member of MTS CREW and his main focus is painting loads of fresh steel. His style is public with his own way of swinging the letters and can be painted super fast. We caught up to find out a bit more about him and asked for his favourite flicks.
1. What got you into graffiti?
I've always been interested in graffiti since a young age, following the names of all the hood heroes in my small hometown but the defining point was through the youth justice system. Pretty much everyone had a tag/nickname and there were scratchies everywhere, one of the bros there did me a sketch and from that day on I was hooked.
2. How would you describe your style and who were your influencers?
I would describe my style as classic NYC letters with inspiration drawn from my tagging its also designed to be painted quickly. My influences early on were drawn locally from TS CREW, K2, TMD and GBAK.
3. What was it like growing up as a young writer in Wellington?
I'm not originally from welly but spent my high school years here, at that time FKB CREW, MYKS and VIPOR were killing the city and were everywhere and doing it proper. The other stand out bombers at that time were QUEST, "F IS FOR FUN" and COVET. Having spent some time there as a kid as well what I liked about Welly is that it had a very unique and funky style where in Auckland the majority of tagging was straights.
4. Do you have a good chase story?
One of my memorable chases happened on an early morning while on acid... I was bombing down a busy main road and while I was mid way through my tag a pig shit down the road and spotted me. I tried to play it off like I did nothing but he knew and came flying down the street and drove up on to the footpath to block my way. I slid across his bonnet like Starsky and Hutch and the chase began.
I ran straight into someone's backyard and started jumping fences he was right behind me and I scattered up a steep bank and managed to lose him, I ended up climbing a tree and watching this dumb dog trying to find me while the sun rose and reality melted before my eyes. Good Times.
5. What motivates you to keep painting?
What keeps me motivated is that I'm constantly growing and challenging myself. I have meet so many dope people over the years i can't imagine my life without graffiti, I'm truly obsessed. My crews keep me well motivated with what they're pumping out as well. Shout out to MTS IK SATG. I'm excited to see what the future holds.
