Repainting a Piece 18 Years Later

A few months ago, I stumbled across some old photo albums filled with pieces I painted between 2006 and 2009. Looking through them brought back a lot of memories, but there was one piece from 2008 that stood out to me.

I thought it would be interesting to go back and repaint that same piece 18 years later.

So on a freezing Canberra morning, I headed out with the old photo and spent the next two days recreating it. I kept the original idea and colours, but painted it the way I would approach the same piece today.

Looking back at the two pieces side by side, you can really see what 18 years of painting does. There are things I probably wouldn't even think twice about now that I struggled with back then, but at the same time, I can still see parts of my style today starting to develop in that old piece.

Going through those photos also got me thinking about that period of my life and how much has changed since then. Graffiti has been one of the few things that's remained a constant through all of it.

This video is about recreating an old piece, but it's also about looking back at where I was then, where I am now, and why after all these years I still enjoy getting out and painting.
