    Five For Five - GOTOO

    Five questions for five flicks

    Featured artist - GOTOO

GOTOO is a graffiti writer from Perth. He started writing around 2001 and since then he has travelled to many countries interrailing and painting panels on different systems. His style is super clean and with his classic G character you can tell it's him a mile off. We caught up to find out a bit more about him and asked for his favourite five flicks.

    1. What got you into graffiti?

I'd say I started the same way most people do, catching the train to and from school. Argue and I would check the line to school and after school we'd get off and in between trains jump onto the tracks and take photos, or just check out the pieces.

    2. What was it like growing up as a young writer in Perth?

Shit, panels don't run unless its peak or special event services and tracksides get cleaned quick, it is what it is... It's probably why most Perth people either move interstate or wrap it up.

    3. You've done a fair bit of traveling, Could you tell us about a memorable mission abroad?

Any mission in Berlin, there's always good company, cheap beers, good babs and even better party.

    4. Do you have a good chase story?

Paris 2010. Klue and I had gone to a reasonably touristy spot with his girlfriend at the time to take photos. Getting into the spot we bumped into two Spanish guys and agreed to all paint together. We had been down there for quite awhile painting, taking photos and posing in front of trains when we saw a bunch of RATP one with a dog heading towards us. We grabbed our bags and quickly climbed the emergency exit only to find out it had been locked from the outside, we thought we were done! As we waited there quietly we saw them walk straight past the exit so we jumped down and ran back the way they had come from knowing it was only a matter of time before they checked the exit.

One of the Spanish guys jumped down first, followed by the ex girlfriend then me, as soon as my feet hit the floor I heard the French yelling and the chase was on. The spot wasn't too far from the station but as I reached the platform and turned around I noticed there was only one security chasing and the ex wasn't there. We pushed our way through the people on the platform and bolted up the stairs and onto the street, he was on our tail for what seemed like forever but after a few kilometres of running we'd finally shook him. We made our way to a phone box and tried to contact Klue and the second Spanish guy, they had gotten away as well! Turns out, after we had jumped down, the RATP had all followed us allowing them to jump down and just run in the other direction to the next station. We all met back at the hostel, rolled some joints and within half an hour the ex walked through the door.

    5. What motivates you to keep painting?

Its hard to say, I can easily go a few months and have no motivation to paint at all but then all of a sudden I just become obsessed again. I love seeing what my friends are doing around the world and country so I guess you could call that motivation.
